Practice makes perfect

Before we can evaluate a sum or difference involving mixed numbers, the mixed numbers must first be rewritten as fractions.

a bc a* c+b/c Simplify
5 56 5* 6+5/6 35/6
Notice that we can also rewrite integers as improper fractions. 13 = 13/1 When adding or subtracting fractions, they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. 13/1 - 35/6 Since 6 is a multiple of 1, we can multiply both the numerator and denominator of 131 by 6 to create a common denominator.
13/1-35/6
13* 6/1* 6-35/6
78/6-35/6
Now, since the denominators are the same, we can subtract the fractions.
78/6-35/6
78-35/6
43/6
