Practice makes perfect

Before we can evaluate a sum or difference involving mixed numbers, the mixed numbers must first be rewritten as fractions.

a bc a* c+b/c Simplify
3 23 3* 3+2/3 11/3
Notice that we can also rewrite integers as improper fractions. 8 = 8/1 When adding or subtracting fractions, they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. 8/1 - 11/3 Since 3 is a multiple of 1, we can multiply both the numerator and denominator of 81 by 3 to create a common denominator.
8/1-11/3
8* 3/1* 3-11/3
24/3-11/3
Now, since the denominators are the same, we can subtract the fractions.
24/3-11/3
24-11/3
13/3
