How many steps to the right of the origin is the point? How many steps above it?
(1,1), first quadrant
To find the x-coordinate of J, we count the number of units that it is placed to the right of the origin. Similarly, to find y-coordinate, we count the number of units that it is above the origin.
From the diagram, we see that M is located 1 unit to the right of the origin and 1 unit above it. Then, its coordinates are x= 1 and y= 1, which we can write as ( 1, 1). Next, we want to state the quadrant or axis location of this point. Recall that there are four quadrants and they are divided by the x- and y-axes.
The four quadrants are named using numbers. For example, the quadrant containing the positive x- and y-coordinates is either called Quadrant (I), the first quadrant, or Q1. Because of this, we can say that M is located in the first quadrant.
