How many steps to the right of the origin is the point? How many steps above it?
(-3,-1), third quadrant
From the diagram, we see that K is located 3 units to the left of the origin and 1 unit below it. Then, its coordinates are x= -3 and y= -1, which we can write as ( -3, -1). Next, we want to state the quadrant or axis location of this point. Recall that there are four quadrants and they are divided by the x- and y-axes.
The four quadrants are named using numbers. For example, the quadrant containing the positive x- and y-coordinates is either called Quadrant (I), the first quadrant, or Q1. Because of this, we can say that L is located in the third quadrant.
