Exercise 28 Page 150

To add decimals, line up the decimal points so that place-value positions correspond.

3.75

Practice makes perfect

Before we find the exact sum, we can make an estimate by rounding each addend. We will round 1.5 to 2 and 2.25 to 2 because they are the closest whole numbers. 2+2=4The sum of 1.5 and 2.25 is about 4. Now we can find the exact sum. To add decimals, we line up the decimal points so that place-value positions correspond. Annex a zero so that each place has a digit.

Now we add the decimals, just as we would with whole numbers, and place the decimal point in the answer.

1.5+2.25=3.75

The answer 3.75 is close to our estimation!
