Exercise 17 Page 52

Recall the definition of a ratio.

5/1

Practice makes perfect

There are many different ways to compare amounts or quantities. A ratio is a comparison of two quantities by division. For example, the ratio of a to b can be written in two different ways. a/b or a: bWe want to find the ratio of cars to vans in a car dealership. To do so, we will write the fraction that represents desired ratio. We will write the number of cars in the numerator and the number of vans in the denominator. l cars→ vans→ 55/11 Finally, since the greatest common factor (GCF) of 55 and 11 is 11, we can reduce the fraction by dividing both the numerator and denominator by 11.

55/11
55÷ 11/11÷ 11
5/1

The ratio is 51.
