Exercise 36 Page 24

Use the conversion factor that 1 ton is equal to 2000 pounds.

5 T=10 000 lb

Practice makes perfect
We are asked to express 5 tons in pounds. 5 tons= pounds To do so, we will use the fact that 1 ton is equal to 2000 pounds. Let's write this relationship as a unit ratio. 2000lb/1 T To perform the conversion, we need to multiply 5 tons by the unit ratio or its reciprocal. Remember, we want to arrange this ratio such that every unit we do not want gets canceled out and only the unit that we want will remain.
5 T= 5 T * 2000 lb/1T
5 T= 5 T/1 * 2000 lb/1T
5 T= 5 T* 2000 lb/1* 1T
5 T= 5 T* 2000 lb/1* 1T
5 T= 5 * 2000 lb/1* 1
5 T= 10 000 lb/1
5 T= 10 000/1 lb
5 T= 10 000 lb
We got that 5 tons is equal to 10 000 pounds. 5 T=10 000 lb
