We are given an equation and we want to find the value of x which makes it true.

17+x=3+17

We can recall a certain property of equation to help us solve for x. Recall the Commutative Property of Addition.

The order in which two or more terms are added does not affect the value of the sum. a+b=b+a

Notice that in our case, we are adding x to a number, 17, and we get the sum of 3 and 17. This means that the value of x must be 3, because of Commutative Property of Addition.
