Exercise 2 Page 202

If a relation is a function, how many y-values can an x-value have?

No, see solution.

Practice makes perfect

We are given a set of ordered pairs representing a relation. (- 5,- 3), (7,2), (3,8), (3,- 8), (5,10)We want to first express the set of given ( x, y) ordered pairs as a arrow diagram. To do it, we will list all of the unique x-values in one vertical list and all unique y-values in another vertical list. Then, we can use arrows to connect corresponding x- and y-values.

For a relation to be a function, each x-value can only be paired with one y-value, but one y-value can be paired with multiple x-values. Let's pay attention to the arrow diagram which we have just constructed.

In the given arrow diagram, we can see that at least one of the x-values corresponds to multiple y-values. Since not all of the values in the domain only point to one value in the range, the relation is not a function.
