Exercise 9 Page 453

The radius of a circle is half the length of the diameter.

8820.26yd^2

Practice makes perfect

Let's look at a circle with the given diameter.

The diameter is 106 yd. Remember that the radius is half the length of the diameter, so let's divide the diameter by 2. r=106 ÷ 2 = 53 This means that the radius of the circle is 53 yd. Remember that the area of a circle with radius r is calculated using the formula below. A=π r^2 We know that the radius of the circle is 53yd. By substituting 53 for r in the formula, we can calculate A. We will use 3.14 for π.
A=Ď€ r^2
A=Ď€( 53)^2
A=Ď€(2809)
A=8820.26
The area of the circle is 8820.26yd^2.
