Exercise 8 Page 389

Practice makes perfect
We are given an experiment and want to represent the sample space by making a table. The sample space of an experiment is the set of all possible outcomes. In this case, the sample space is the combination of bread type and style.
  • Bread Type — Wheat or Multigrain or Rye or Oat
  • Bread Style — Loaf or Rolls

To make the table, we will list the type of bread in the left column and the style of bread in the top row.

Loaf Rolls
Wheat Wheat, Loaf Wheat, Rolls
Multigrain Multigrain, Loaf Multigrain, Rolls
Rye Rye, Loaf Rye, Rolls
Oat Oat, Loaf Oat, Rolls

In Part B, we want to find the number of possible outcomes. We already stated that the sample space is the set of all possible outcomes. Because of this, the number of possible outcomes is equal to the number of combinations in the table, 8.
