Exercise 10 Page 153

To solve problems that involve percent, use the percent equation.

72.5 %

Practice makes perfect
We want to find what percent of the regular price is the sale price of a shirt. To do so, we will use the percent equation. part = percent * whole We know that a shirt that normally costs $30 is on sale for $21.75. Let's draw a bar diagram to represent the problem. In the diagram, p will represent the desired percent.
The bar diagram
Now we will apply the percent equation to the given situation. part = percent * whole [0.4em] ↓ [0.4em] 21.75 = p * 30 Next, we will solve the equation that we got for p. To do so, we will use the Division Property of Equality.
21.75=p* 30
21.75/30=30p/30
21.75/30=30p/30
21.75/30=p
0.725 =p
p =0.725
We got that p= 0.725 is a solution to the equation. To write the decimal as a percent, we need to move the decimal point two places to the right and write the percent symbol. 0.725 = 72.5 % We found that the sale price is 72.5 % of the regular price.
