Exercise 7 Page 135

To write a fraction as a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. To write a fraction as a percent, find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100.

Decimal: 0.4
Percent: 40 %

Practice makes perfect

Fractions, decimals, and percents are three ways to show parts of a whole. We want to write a fraction as a decimal and as a percent. Let's do these things one at a time.

Decimal

To write a fraction as a decimal, we divide the numerator by the denominator.
division

We found that 25 expressed as a decimal is 0.4.

Percent

To write a fraction as a percent, we first find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. 2/5=x/100 We multiply 5 by 20 to get 100, so we will also multiply 2 by 20 to get an equivalent fraction.
40
We found that 25 and 40100 are equivalent fractions. Now we can write the new fraction as a percent by looking at the numerator and adding a percent symbol. 2/5=40/100= 40 %
