Exercise 18 Page 18

Rewrite the given mixed number as a fraction, and then recall how to convert a fraction to a decimal.

6.54ft

Practice makes perfect

We want to find out how tall the two boxes stacked on top of each other would be. To do so, we will rewrite the given mixed number as a decimal to add the heights of the two boxes. First, let's take a look at a graph that represents this situation.

From the exercise, we know that one box is 3 311 feet tall and the second one is 3.27 feet tall. Let's rewrite 3 311 as a fraction so it will be easier for us to convert it to decimal form.
3 311
3* 11+3/11
33+3/11
36/11
3 311 written as a fraction is equal to 3611. Now, to write this number in decimal form we need to divide the numerator, 36, by the denominator, 11. Let's do it!
Notice that the products and remainders repeat, so the remainder will never be 0. Because of this, we can say that 3 311 written in decimal form is a repeating decimal equal to 3.27. Let's add both numbers to find the combined height of the two boxes. Keep in mind that we do not have to find the exact value — we can approximate 3.27 to 3.27. Now we can add the two heights! 3.27+3.27=5.54
