Exercise 12 Page 397

Use the formula for the area of a triangle.

24m^2

Practice makes perfect

Let's take a look at the given triangle.

Remember the formula for the area of a triangle. A=1/2bh In this formula, b is the length of the base and h is the height. For our triangle, we will substitute b= 8 meters for the base and h= 6 meters for the height into the formula to calculate A. Let's do this!
A=1/2bh
A=1/2( 8)( 6)
A=8/2* 6
A=4 * 6
A=24
The area of the triangle is 24 square meters. Notice that we can also use the base that is 10 meters and its corresponding height of 4.8 meters.
Let's calculate the area using these values.
A=1/2bh
A=1/2( 10)( 4.8)
A=10/2* 4.8
A=5 * 4.8
A=24
We ended with the same result as before. Remember that it does not matter what base and corresponding height we use to calculate the area.
