Exercise 11 Page 397

Use the formula for the area of a triangle.

54cm^2

Practice makes perfect

Let's take a look at the given triangle.

Remember the formula for the area of a triangle. A=1/2bh In this formula, b is the length of the base and h is the height. For our triangle, we cam substitute b= 12 centimeters for the base and h= 9 centimeters for the height into the formula to calculate A. Let's do this!
A=1/2bh
A=1/2( 12)( 9)
A=12/2* 9
A=6 * 9
A=54
The area of the triangle is 54 square centimeters. Notice that we can also use the base that is 21.6 centimeters and its corresponding height of 5 centimeters.
Let's calculate the area using these values.
A=1/2bh
A=1/2( 21.6)( 5)
A=1/2(108)
A=108/2
A=54
We ended with the same result as before. Remember that it does not matter what base and corresponding height we use to calculate the area.
