Fractions, decimals, and percents are three ways to show parts of a whole. We want to write a percent as a fraction and as a decimal. Let's do these things one at a time.

Fraction

To write a percent as a fraction, we write the number part as a numerator over 100. 140 %=140/100Then, if possible, we simplify the fraction.

140/100

a/b=.a / 20./.b / 20.

140÷ 20/100÷ 20

Calculate quotient

7/5

We found that 140 % expressed as a fraction is 140100, or 75.

Decimal

To write a percent as a decimal, we ignore the percent symbol and move the decimal point two places to the left.

We found that 140 % expressed as a decimal is 1.40 or 1.4.
