Exercise 11 Page 255

How does the dependent variable,y, change when the independent variable,x, changes.

y=x+3

Practice makes perfect
First, we look at the pattern in the table that relates the dependent variable y and the independent variable x.
x 2 4 6 8 10
Pattern 2+ 3 4+ 3 6+ 3 8+ 3 10+ 3
y 5 7 9 11 13

Looking at our table, we see that we get the value of y when we add 3 to the value of the variable x. Now we want to write an equation to describe this relationship. On the one side of the equation we will have the value of y and on the other side we will have the value of x increased by 3. x+ 3=y y=x+ 3 The equation that describes the relationship between y and x is y=x+3.
