How does the dependent variable,y, change when the independent variable,x, changes.
y=x+3
x | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Pattern | 2+ 3 | 4+ 3 | 6+ 3 | 8+ 3 | 10+ 3 |
y | 5 | 7 | 9 | 11 | 13 |
Looking at our table, we see that we get the value of y when we add 3 to the value of the variable x. Now we want to write an equation to describe this relationship. On the one side of the equation we will have the value of y and on the other side we will have the value of x increased by 3. x+ 3=y y=x+ 3 The equation that describes the relationship between y and x is y=x+3.
