a Let's consider the following survey question.

Jolly Juice has twice the Vitamin E of other brands. Which brand of juice is the healthiest?

Here, the question starts with the statement that states that one brand has much more vitamin E compared to other brands. Because of that, respondents assume that this brand is healthier and are more likely to answer in that way. This means that the question is biased.

b Now we are asked the following survey question.

Do you think that people who hurt defenseless animals should be punished?

To determine whether the question is biased, let's take a closer look at the middle

  • [...] hurt defenseless animals [...] — This part could suggest the answer because the word defenseless may evoke strong feelings in some individuals, which may lead them to give what they feel is the correct answer.

Based on these points, we can conclude that the survey question is biased.

c Let's take a look at the following survey question.

Do you agree that Hal Poppington is the best man to be elected Mayor?

Usually, there are many candidates running for mayor in the same election. However, only one candidate is mentioned in this question and it is suggested that he is the best man for the job. Because of that, we can conclude that the survey question is biased.

d Finally, we are asked the following survey question.

What is your favorite kind of juice?

This question is an open question that does not suggest any answer. There are no words that could influence respondents' emotions. Based on these points, we can conclude that the survey question is not biased.
