Exercise 112 Page 64

What does each statement tell us about the person's study habits and hair?

See solution.

Practice makes perfect

We want to show where each described person should be represented in the given Venn diagram.

If a person studies a lot for class, they should be represented inside the circle marked #1, and if they do not study a lot for class, they should be represented outside the circle. Similarly, if they have long hair, they should be represented inside the circle marked # 2, and if they do not have long hair, they should be represented outside the circle.

Carol

To place Carol correctly in the Venn diagram, we have to analyze the statement describing her study habits and hair. I rarely study and enjoy braiding my long hair Since Carol does not study much and has long hair, we should place her in #2, but outside #1.

Bob

Like with Carol, we have to analyze the statement that describes Bob's study habits and hair. I never do homework and have a crew cut Since Bob never studies and has short hair, we should place him outside of both circles.

Pedro

As with Carol and Bob, we have to analyze the statement that describes Pedro's study habits and hair. &I love joining after school study teams &to prepare for tests, and I like being bald Pedro likes to study a lot for class and is bald. Therefore, we should place him in #1, but outside of #2.

Empty Portion of the Venn Diagram

We have not placed anyone in the intersection of the two circles of the Venn diagram.

In order to place someone in the intersection of #1 and #2, they have to be represented both in #1 and in #2. This means that the person needs to study a lot for class and have long hair.
