Exercise 74 Page 279

Practice makes perfect
Let's perform the addition.

7+(-3)
7-3
4

We can see that adding a negative number is the same as subtracting its positive counterpart. Below we will demonstrate this by finding 7 and moving 3 units to the left on the number line.

The resulting position, after moving to the left on the number line, is the sum. 7+(-3)=4

When multiplying real numbers, the product will be positive if the signs are the same and it will be negative if the signs are different. cc Same Sign & Different Signs (+)(+)=(+) & (+)(-)=(-) (-)(-)=(+) & (-)(+)=(-)In our case one number is positive and one number is negative, so the product will be negative.

(10)(- 5)
- 10* 5
- 50

We can verify this using a calculator.

Let's perform the addition. - 5+6=1 We can see that adding a positive number is the same as subtracting its negative counterpart. Below we will demonstrate this by finding - 5 and moving 6 units to the right on the number line.

The resulting position, after moving to the right on the number line, is the sum. - 5+6=1

Let's perform the addition.

(- 2)+(- 2)
(- 2)-2
- 4

We can see that adding a negative number is the same as subtracting its positive counterpart. Below we will demonstrate this by finding - 2 and moving 2 units to the left on the number line.

The resulting position, after moving to the left on the number line, is the sum. (- 2)+(-2)=- 4
