Exercise 117 Page 53

Start by rewritting all numbers as decimals.

- 2, 0, 0.4, 1/2, 5/8, 1.1, 5/3, 2

Practice makes perfect
We want to order the given numbers from least to greatest. 1/2 1.1 5/3 2 0 0.4 - 2 5/8 It is difficult to compare decimals and fractions, so let's rewrite all the fractions as decimals. 1/2 1.1 5/3 2 0 0.4 -2 5/8 ⇕ 0.5 1.1 1.6 2 0 0.4 -2 0.625 Now we can place the numbers on a number line. This will give us the order from least to greatest.
plotting point
The number that is the farthest to the left is -2, so this is the lowest value from the list. The farthest to the right is 2, so it is the greatest. We can write the numbers in order from least to greatest by moving from left to right on the number line. - 2, 0, 0.4, 1/2, 5/8, 1.1, 5/3, 2
