Exercise 109 Page 154

Practice makes perfect
a To find f(-2), we have to substitute x=-2 into f(x)=3x-9 and evaluate.
f(x)=3x-9
f( -2)=3( -2)-9
f(-2)=-6-9
f(-2)=-15
b To find g(-2), we have to substitute x=-2 into g(x)=- x^2 and evaluate.
g(x)=- x^2
g( -2)=-( -2)^2
g(-2)=-(4)
g(-2)=-4
c This time we are given the value and asked to find x when it equals 0. To find it, we will substitute f(x)=0 into the given rule and solve for x.
f(x)=3x-9
0=3x-9
9=3x
3=x
x=3
When x=3, the value of the function f(x) equals 0.
d To find g(m), we will substitute x=m in g(x)=- x^2 and evaluate.
g(x)=- x^2
g( m)=- m^2
