Exercise 7 Page 251

The distance between two numbers on a number line is the absolute value of the difference of the two numbers.

4.1 units

Practice makes perfect

We want to determine the distance between - 5 25 and - 1 310 on a number line. First, we can rewrite the mixed numbers as decimals.

Mixed Number Write as Decimal
- 5 25= - 5 410 - 5.4
- 1 310 - 1.3
Now, we can plot the decimals on the number line!
plotting point
We want to find and interpret the distance between the points on the diagram. First, we can recall that the distance between any two numbers on a number line is the absolute value of the difference of the two numbers.
Now, we can use this information to determine the distance between - 5 25 and - 1 310. We can do so by substituting - 5.4 for p and - 1.3 for q in the distance expression.
p-q
- 5.4-( - 1.3)
- 5.4+1.3
- 4.1
4.1
The distance between - 5 25 and - 1 310 is equal to 4.1 units.
