Practice makes perfect

Fractions, decimals, and percents are three ways to show parts of a whole. We want to write a fraction as a decimal and as a percent. Let's do these things one at a time.

Decimal

To write a fraction as a decimal, we divide the numerator by the denominator.

division

We found a pattern in the given quotient! 1÷ 6 = 0.1666... We can write this repeating pattern as 0.16. 1÷ 6 = 0.16 We found that 16 expressed as a decimal is 0.16.

Percent

To write a fraction as a percent, we can use the equivalent decimal. To write a decimal as a percent, we multiply by 100 and add the percent symbol %.

We found that 0.16 expressed as a percent is 16.6 %.
