Exercise 9 Page 273

To write a fraction as a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. To write a fraction as a percent, find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100.

Decimal: 1.5
Percent: 155.5 %

Practice makes perfect

Fractions, decimals, and percents are three ways to show parts of a whole. We want to write a fraction as a decimal and as a percent. Let's do these things one at a time.

Writing a Fraction as a Decimal

To write a fraction as a decimal, we divide the numerator by the denominator.

Applet to compute the division of two numbers

Notice that the quotient is a repeating decimal — the digit 5 repeats indefinitely. Using bar notation, we can write that 149 expressed as a decimal is 1.5.

Writing a Decimal as a Percent

Instead of writing a fraction as a percent, let's use our previous work and convert the decimal to a percent. To write a decimal as a percent, we multiply by 100 and add the percent symbol %.

Decimal to percent

We found that 1.555555... expressed as a percent is 155.5555 ... %, or 155.5 %. This means that 149 expressed as a percent is also 155.5 %.
