Exercise 7 Page 273

To write a fraction as a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. To write a fraction as a percent, find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100.

Decimal: 0.85
Percent: 85 %

Practice makes perfect

Fractions, decimals, and percents are three ways to show parts of a whole. We want to write a fraction as a decimal and as a percent. Let's do these things one at a time.

Writing a Fraction as a Decimal

To write a fraction as a decimal, we divide the numerator by the denominator.

Applet to compute the division of two numbers
We found that 1720 expressed as a decimal is 0.85.

Writing a Fraction as a Percent

To write a fraction as a percent, we first find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. 17/20=x/100 We multiply 20 by 5 to get 100, so we will also multiply 17 by 5 to get an equivalent fraction.

Writing an equivalent fraction

We found that 1720 and 85100 are equivalent fractions. Now we can write the new fraction as a percent by looking at the numerator and adding a percent symbol. 17/20=85/100= 85 %
