Exercise 12 Page 65

Recall the rule about the factors of the denominator that helps to determine whether the decimal form of a fraction terminates or repeats.

Terminates, see solution.

Practice makes perfect

We are asked to determine whether the decimal form of the given fraction terminates or repeats, without dividing. 11/40 We will look at the factors of the denominator. If the denominator contains only factors of 2, or only factors of 5, or only factors of 2 and 5, then the decimal form of a fraction terminates. If the denominator contains any other factors besides 2 and 5, then the decimal form of a fraction repeats. Let's take a look at the factors of the denominator of the given fraction. 11/40 = 3/2 * 2 * 2 * 5 We can see that 2 and 5 are the only factors of 40. Therefore, the decimal form of the given fraction terminates.
