Exercise 3 Page 384

The phrase is less than or equal to divides the sentence into what should be on the left-hand side and what should be on the right-hand side of the inequality.

w-3 ≤ 10

Practice makes perfect
We are given a word sentence and we want to write an inequality that it represents. A number w minus3 is less than or equal to 10. Every inequality has an inequality symbol and values or expressions on either side of this symbol. In this exercise, we have the phrase is less than or equal to so we can identify that the inequality symbol should be >.

A number w minus3 ≤ 10. On the left-hand side, we have the phrase A number w minus 3. These words tell us that w is a variable symbol. The word minus tell us that we have to use subtraction in our inequality. A number w minus 3 ≤ 10. w - 3 ≤ 10. On the right-hand side, we have the constant 10. If we put these sides together, we have a complete inequality. A number w minus3 is less than or equal to 10. w - 3 ≤ 10.
