Exercise 9 Page 177

Rewrite a decimal number and a fraction as percents.

0.85

Practice makes perfect
Decimals, fractions, and percents are ways to show parts of a whole. We want to tell which number is greater. 0.85, 4/5 To do this, we will write a decimal and a fraction as percents. To write a decimal as a percent, we move the decimal point two places to the right and add the percent symbol.
We found that 0.85 expressed as a percent is 85 %. Let's continue with 45. To write a fraction as a percent, we first find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. 4/5=x/100 We multiply 5 by 20 to get 100, so we will also multiply 4 by 20 to get an equivalent fraction.
4/5
We found that 45 and 80100 are equivalent fractions. Now we can write the new fraction as a percent by looking at the numerator and adding a percent symbol. 4/5=80/100 ⇒ 4/5= 80 % Since 85 is greater than 80, 85 % is greater than 80 %. This means that 0.85 is greater than 45.
