Exercise 10 Page 177

Rewrite a fraction as a percent. To do this, find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100.

9/50

Practice makes perfect
Fractions and percents are ways to show parts of a whole. We want to tell which number is greater. 9/50, 17 % To do this, we will write a fraction as a percent. To write a fraction as a percent, we first find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. 9/50=x/100 We multiply 50 by 2 to get 100, so we will also multiply 9 by 2 to get an equivalent fraction.
12/5
We found that 950 and 18100 are equivalent fractions. Now we can write the new fraction as a percent by looking at the numerator and adding a percent symbol. 9/50=18/100 ⇒ 9/50= 18 % Since 18 is greater than 17, 18 % is greater than 17 %. This means that 950 is greater than 17 %.
