We can use a measure of center and a measure of variation to describe the distribution of a data set. To determine which measures are the most appropriate to use, we can see the shape of the distribution.

Consider the given histogram.

Most of the data values are on the right and the tail extends to the left. The distribution is skewed to the left, which means that we can use the median and the interquartile range to describe the center and the variation.
