Exercise 5 Page 7

What operation does add and multiply by represent?

Example Answer: (5+8)*4

Practice makes perfect
We are asked to write an algebraic expression for the given verbal expression. Add 5 and 8, then multiply by 4.

We can separate it into two parts. The first one is Add 5 and 8. To denote the addition of two numbers we use the + sign. Let's change this part into a algebraic expression. 5 + 8 The second part is then multiply by 4. This means that the result of what came before it should be multiplied by 4. In order to make sure that the whole previous expression will be multiplied, let's place it between the parentheses. ( 5 + 8 ) * 4 Note that this is just one of possible ways to write this expression.
