Exercise 9 Page 456

Is the product even or odd?

Conjecture: The product of any two even integers is even.

Practice makes perfect

We are asked to make a conjecture about the product of any two even integers. Let's attempt to find a pattern by calculating some products of even integers. (-4)(-2)&=8 (4)(-6)&=-24 (-8)(12)&=-96Examining the products, we see that all of them are even. With this information, we can write our conjecture. Conjecture: The product of any two even integers equals an even integer. Let's test this a few more times with some other factors. (-2)(4)&=8 (8)(8)&=64 (10)(12)&=120 It would appear that our conjecture is true.
