How does the number of cubes increase from one figure to the next?

Let's count the number of cubes in each of the figures to try to find the pattern.

From one figure to the next, the number of cubes increases by one on the top and one on each of the sides — a total increase of 5 cubes. This means the next figure should have 16 cubes and the figure after that will have 21 cubes.
