Exercise 10 Page 456

Is the sum even or odd?

Conjecture: The sum of an even integer and an odd integer equals an odd integer.

Practice makes perfect

Let's attempt to find a pattern by calculating the sum of an even integer and an odd integer. 2+3&=5 &4+7=11 6+9&=15 &8+11=19Examining the sums, we see that all of them equal an odd number. With this information we can write a conjecture. Conjecture: &The sum of an even integer &and an odd integer equals &an odd integer. Let's test this a few times with some other integers. 4+5&=9 &5+8=13 9+4&=13 &12+11=23 It would appear that our conjecture is true.
