Exercise 1 Page 452

How does the figure number and the number of pieces compare?

Practice makes perfect

We want to predict how many pieces are in the fifth figure of the given pattern. Let's draw the first four figures and count the number of pieces in each of them.

We can turn this pattern into a sequence using the figure number n and the number of pieces a_n. n:& 1, 2, 3, 4 a_n:& 2, 4, 6, 8 Examining the sequence, notice that the number of pieces is always twice the figure number. The fifth figure should, therefore, be divided into 5* 2=10 pieces. Now we can draw our fifth figure.
