Since RM and MS are congruent, the expressions for their lengths must be equal. We can set the two expressions equal to one another and solve for x.

6x-2=3x+7
3x-2=7
3x=9
x=3

Because M is a midpoint, the length of RS is equal to the sum of RM and MS. This is a case of the Segment Addition Postulate. RS = RM + MS We can substitute the given values and x=3 into this equation to find RS.

RS = RM+MS
RS = 6x-2+ 3x+7
RS = 9x+5
RS = 9( 3)+5
RS = 27+5
