Exercise 31 Page 222

Practice makes perfect
a

Let's isolate x on one of the sides by using inverse operations and Properties of Equality.

x+2=3x-4
-2x+2=-4
-2x=-6
x=-6/-2
x=3

b

Note that both equations are written in slope-intercept form.

Slope-Intercept Form:& y= mx+ b Equation (I):& y= 1x+ 2 Equation (II):& y= 3x+( - 4) We will plot each y-intercept and then use the slopes to find another point on each line. Then, we will connect the points using a straight edge.

The lines intersect at the point (3,5). This is the solution to the system of linear equations.

c

The equation in Part A is the result of equating the equations in Part B. The solution to the equation in Part A is x=3, which is also the x-coordinate of the solution to the system of equations in Part B. Notice, however, that the solution to the system consists of an x-coordinate and a y-coordinate.
