Practice makes perfect

A system of equations can be solved by using a graphing calculator. Before we can do that, we have to write both equations in slope-intercept form.

- 7x+6y=0 & (I) 0.5x+y=2 & (II)

(I), (II): Write in slope-intercept form
6y=7x 0.5x+y=2
y= 76x 0.5x+y=2
y= 76x y=- 0.5x+2

Now we can enter the equations in the calculator. To do that, we press the button Y= and then write the equations on the two first rows.

Having entered the equations,plot them by pressing GRAPH.

Next, to find the point of intersection we push 2nd and CALC and choose the fifth option, intersect.

We will see the graph again. Now we have to select the first and second curve before guessing where the point of intersection is. Make sure to place the cursor as close as possible to the point of intersection before pressing ENTER again.

The solution to the system of equations is (1.2,1.4).
