3. Writing Equations of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
Sign In
What do parallel lines have in common?
Error: They used the negative reciprocal of the slope instead of using the same slope.
Correct line: y=1/4x+11/4
Parallel lines have the same slope. Therefore, the slope of a parallel line to y= 14x+2 is 14, and not - 4. This is the mistake they have made. The line whose equation we want to write passes through the point ( 1, 3). We can substitute this information in the point-slope form to write its equation.
Distribute 1/4
LHS+3=RHS+3
a = 4* a/4
