What can you do to isolate a variable in an inequality?

Inequalities can be solved in the same way as equations, by using the Addition and Subtraction Properties of Inequality to perform inverse operations on both sides until the variable is isolated.

- 8 ≤ 8+y
- 16 ≤ y
y ≥ - 16

This inequality tells us that all values greater than or equal to - 16 will satisfy the inequality. Below we demonstrate the inequality by graphing the solution set on a number line. Notice that y can equal - 16, which we show with a closed dot on the number line.
