Exercise 3 Page 62

What can we do to isolate a variable in an inequality?

Solution Set: y<1/2
Graph:

Practice makes perfect

Inequalities can be solved in the same way as equations, by using the Addition and Subtraction Properties of Inequality to perform inverse operations on both sides until the variable is isolated.

1/4>y-1/4
2/4>y
1/2>y
y<1/2

This inequality tells us that all values less than 12 will satisfy the inequality. Below we demonstrate the inequality by graphing the solution set on a number line. Notice that y cannot equal 12, which we show with an open dot on the number line.
