Exercise 18 Page 548

Use the translation to move the points by adding 9 to the x-coordinates and subtracting 2 from the y-coordinates of each vertex.

Practice makes perfect

Before we try to translate the given points, let's draw the triangle â–³ PQR on a coordinate plane using the given points. This triangle will be our preimage.

Now that we have the preimage, we can create the image using the translation (x,y) → (x+9,y-2). This translation tells us that for every point in △ PQR, we should add 9 to the x-coordinate and subtract 2 from the y-coordinate. ccc (x,y) &→ &(x+9,y-2) P(-2,3) &→ & P'(7,1) Q(1,2) &→ & Q'(10,0) R(3,-1) &→ & R'(12,-3) Now we have the points for the image. Let's add them to the same coordinate plane as the preimage.

We can see that the translation moved the points to the right and down. Finally, we can connect the points to have the new triangle.
