Exercise 37 Page 616

Practice makes perfect

a We are told that a college wants to survey its graduating seniors to determine how many of them have already found jobs in their field of study after graduation. Recall that a ratio of employed people to all of a population is called an employment rate. Therefore, the objective of the survey is to determine the employment rate of graduates in their field of study.

b Now we want to identify the population of the survey. To do this let's take a look at the given description of the study.

A college wants to survey its graduating seniors to determine how many of them have already found jobs in their field of study after graduation.

Therefore, the population for this survey is all graduating seniors of the college.

c Finally, we are asked to write two unbiased questions for the described survey. Since we want determine how many graduates have already found a job in their field, we could first ask whether the respondent is employed.
  • Are you employed?

Then if a respondent says yes, we could then ask specifically whether the job is in the respondent's field of study.

  • Are you employed?
  • If yes, is your job in your field of study?

Notice that this is only an example solution because we can think of many other survey questions. However, we should always make sure that our questions provide enough information to give an accurate opinion and do not encourage a particular answer.
