Exercise 3 Page 614

In what situations are the simulations useful?

Sample Solution: To estimate how much time is needed to fill a swimming pool.

Practice makes perfect

Let's list all four methods of collecting data.

Method Description
Experiment We impose a treatment on individuals to collect data on their response to the treatment.
Observational Study We observe individuals and measures variables without controlling the individuals or their environment.
Survey We ask sample members one or more questions to investigate at least one characteristic of a population.
Simulation We use a model to reproduce the conditions of a situation so that the simulated outcomes match the real-world outcomes.

Notice that sometimes it would be impractical or dangerous to create a situation in real-life. In such cases we should use a simulation to conduct a study. Let's imagine that we want to estimate how much time we need to fill our swimming pool.

Since it would be impractical to fill the whole swimming pool just to estimate the time we need to fill it, we could use a simulation. For instance, we could measure the time we need to fill a sink and then use a proportion of the volumes.
