Exercise 55 Page 162

Create two tables of values and then plot the graphs on the same coordinate plane.

Graph:

Comparison: See solution.

Practice makes perfect

To graph the functions without going through the entire process of transforming the parent function, we can instead make two tables of values. Then we only need to plot the ordered pairs that we find.

Graph

Let's begin with creating a table of values of function f.

x |x-1|+2 Simplify f(x)
-1 | -1-1|+2 |-2|+2 4
0 | 0-1|+2 |-1|+2 3
1 | 1-1|+2 |0|+2 2
2 | 2-1|+2 |1|+2 3
3 | 3-1|+2 |2|+2 4
Now we do the same with function g.

x 4|x-1|+8 Simplify g(x)
-1 4| -1-1|+8 4|-2|+8 16
0 4| 0-1|+8 4|-1|+8 12
1 4| 1-1|+8 4|0|+8 8
2 4| 2-1|+8 4|1|+8 12
3 4| 3-1|+8 4|2|+8 16

Finally we can plot these ordered pairs on one coordinate plane.

Comparison

As we can see from the graphs, the function g is a vertical stretch by a factor of 4 of the graph of function f.
